Being a wedding photographer is really an interesting occupation as I get to know everyone’s love story whether they like it or not. lol. Seriously, not for any other purposes but just in hoping that I get to know more about them in the shortest time possible while producing photographs that tags nearest to the couple’s real self.

Something worth mentioning is that Wee Han is an awesome hubby many girls dreamt of cause he loves to cook! He even made me and Joan some nice sandwiches when we were there for the makeover early in the morning. Now here’s my favorite picks for their Love Diary session done wholly in Penang and with Sol Cover‘s dinner gown. Have a great great weekend ahead everyone!

&.b.t.w. – The first shot was not a sunrise but a ‘Flash Rise’ with Joan’s help. Cause when we start to shoot, the sky was actually gloomy and rained a bit too, that explains where the rainbow comes from.

&.&.b.t.w. – I am inspired by Wee Han’s new Honda Insight’s huge rear boot space. Thus tried to create the last shot. They looked very happy but the fact is, we trial and error for a couple of minutes to squeeze them in + having the head angled right + triggering my flash on their hands + keeping them happy in the boot. Applause to the couple!!!

&.&.&.b.t.w. – Stole some time from my hectic work to watch Nasi Lemak 2.0, a local film that I’d say it’s my favorite now. It’s a movie that belongs to all Malaysian. Lots of Malaysian culture and true happening depicted cleverly inside. Just watch and you’ll know what I mean.

My sister just had her wedding day last weekend over Penang. I’m the official photographer for her couple portrait as well as her wedding day coverage. She told my brother in law that, “You can decide whatever you like for the wedding but the photographer must be my brother. I only trust him to treasure this important occasion.”

And wow, those words are extreme heavy responsibility I tell you. hehe.. This post is mainly about their couple portrait or some of you at western countries called it Engagement Portraiture or known as Pre-Wedding Photo here in Malaysia or LOVE DIARY in Milan Teh Studio’s term. Joan did my sister’s makeup & hairdo and we’ve shot all of them in Penang, over the beach, nice sanctuary, mansion, and roadside.

Joseph is a huge fan for cycling and this has largely influenced my sister to follow him cycling around here and there. This explains why there are bicycle in the shots. The shooting process is real challenging cause both of them especially my sister is so mischievous, you’ll see why :p Enjoy the series!

&.b.t.w. – I am deeply inspired by Tofurious & love his way of ending a blogpost with personal happenings. I’ll do it more often as I think it sounds more humanly. And hey, my packages are named “Something Diary”! Suits my ‘theme’ perfectly. Hope I’m not tagged as a copy dog ;p

&.&.b.t.w. – My brother in law created his own battery-powered-leaning-mountain-bike using 6 months time and went fetching the bride with 11 mountain bikes last weekend. It attracted our local news from channel NTV7. If you wanna see the 2 minutes news, it’s available at Facebook or Youtube.

Please bear with me a bit, I’m not sure why but I seemed to have a sort of ‘mental block’ from writing English properly in the blog for the recent months. This explains why last few blog posts was relatively short than the norm. I think I need some proper English education again!

Back to this shoot, we wanted to do something youthful and glamorous so we started shooting from noon time at the botanical garden then Georgetown area. It’s indeed a challenge to shoot under harsh sun as I’m more of a natural light guy. Gotta make full use any kind of light given to me at the shooting session to get the outcome I need.

I think all this while, color for my photos are of ‘good-boy-color’ which are quite close to the original shot. I decided to experiment a little differently playing with color for this series hoping to get some breakthrough adding more interestingness to my work. Back to this post, it’s about Sunny & Chao Ran. Chao Ran was a friend I knew him from school band since high school. That time, he shows off the little picture in his wallet of a girl whom he told us the name is SunSun. They both have been together for 9 amazing years now since high school. The feeling is just unique, when a friend that I knew from high school hire me to do their couple portrait.

I plan to post this up last month but was ‘consumed’ by work, sorry about that. Have you heard of ‘Thirty Two At The Mansion‘ or the restaurant better known as the ‘Mansion 32‘ in Penang? If you have not heard of this place, it’s located just opposite the new Lexus showroom(near E&O hotel). I always wanted to visit this place, matter fact, it’s my second time visiting this restaurant after seeing so much great shots taken by fellow photographers. Almost one year ago, I was here, on the position of assistant photographer, holding studio flash/reflector for a guest photographer hired by the bridal house. That time, the beautiful scene around this restaurant and the fragrant of the food attracted me deeply! The restaurant remained great but a lot had changed in my life and I’m glad I made the change.

This round, Irene, James & I, we want something indoor and glamorous. And so, we decided to pick on this location and get the gown & coat from Sol Cover. In case you’d want to know, photo shooting is available by appointment at ‘Mansion 32‘ after you bought a food voucher from them You can also hold your wedding banquet here too. So, back to this shoot. This marks the first collaboration of Milan Teh Studio with Sol Cover for couple that I shoot. Before this, all my clients had their clothes ready for me. That’s a good case for me as before this, I imagined that it would be a really tedious process to engage gown shops or bridal shop for gown rental but our first experience with Sol Cover turned other wise. To make things short, it’s like this for gown rental:

1) Make appointment. Visit Sol Cover, take measurement & select gown/coat.
2) Before shooting day, try altered gown (lots of brides are on a diet marathon before pre-wedding shoot!).
3) Collect clothes. Return clothes.

If you may asked, the reason we choose Sol Cover because we are alike ie: based in Penang. All their gowns, designers, tailors are all under one roof in Penang. So, our clients would have no hassle engaging their service especially when the shoot and where they live are Penang based. Therefore, all your attire needs could be fulfilled here. Furthermore, if you have a specific look/theme you’d like to have for your shoot, let us know! We have Joan, which is our professional makeup artist and image consultant, she could help out on your gown selection day to help you pick the best that suit what you love and some matching accessories. The makeup and hairstyling for Irene on this shoot is all done by Joan.

Susan and Gim Eng are really nice to bring me, Yit Pong and Jean to places that they had already went several times before without complaining, waiting for us to stop by one corner and another shooting scenery. So, the first day actually ended up like a leisure shooting for the 3 of us, lol~ not forgetting, also looking for suitable location for the pre-wedding shoot on the next day. Let me guide all of you down these favorite shots of mine for what had happened…

The first location of our choice is the beach as Susan loves the blue sky and sea

Just before we headed out to the hot sun, an idea came in a sudden when we saw the parachutes and thought that it could be an interesting ‘prop‘. So the idea starts with Gim Eng flying up to show his love to Susan! Initially Susan wanted to join together with him but unfortunately wearing skirt + para-sailing doesn’t seem appropriate. So, Susan will just wait for her prince to land with hand bouquet in his hand.

Gim Eng is such a sweet hubby. He took this challenge although he is a little scared with the height air-borne above the sea.

Next, we head back to the hotel, took lunch and shot around the hotel area.

After the sun has set, I’ve suggested to play around a few more shots with artificial lighting with my camera flashes. They are indeed the most time consuming part and I’m happy that Susan and Gim Eng are willing try new things out & bear with me for this night session.

As a conclusion, I love this shoot. There were a lot of laughter and it’s very enjoyable, I don’t feel like I’m out for work at all. I’d have to thank Yit Pong & Jean big time for helping me to carry my stuffs and hold the flashes. Without them, I might have passed out in the middle of the shoot. hehe. And, a huge THANK YOU to Susan & Gim Eng for having me to shoot their pre-wedding photographs at Langkawi and their nice arrangements during our stay there. Hope that everyone enjoyed the shots posted here as much as I enjoyed the 3 days trip!

The shot above is Joan doing makeup for Pei Ying in their hotel room. I was told by Pei Ying that Nilson is kind of camera shy and I did a short ‘warm up exercise’ with them in their hotel room to let them have a feel on how I work, what will be happening later on when we go out and, to make them feel at ease in front of the camera.

Both of them have very sweet smile and I really enjoy shooting for them with no problem.

And then, we move on to one of the beaches along Batu Feringghi at Penang, Malaysia. Pei Ying loves blue sky, blue sea and white clouds. I told her a very cruel truth about Penang is that, the bluest sea & sky could only be found at mid-noon. She was okay with that and so we went to search for a suitable beach to carry out the shoot.

I’ve seen this kind of blue sky and sea many times in Penang but never photographed them cause the sun is REALLY too hot at this hour. Credits to Pei Ying & Nilson for being able to pose that comfortable under the hot sun. Don’t you just love the color? The shot below is straight out of camera.

After we’re done with the first gown. We hit New World Park for some Penang ‘Char Kuey Tiao‘. Next, we went to a Bodhi activity center that I really love. It’s my first time to shoot there with a bride & groom and there are a lot of photographic possibilities yet to be explored there. Thanks to a friend, See Won for bringing me to this place. Below are some of my favorite shots.

I love this shoot. Love the color and the natural expressions the most. I wanted to thank Pei Ying and Nilson for giving us this opportunity to serve them and hope that they’ll live happily ever after.

This post is to answer everyone of you. Here(www.milanteh.com), we will only feature photos that we shoot for clients of Milan Teh Studio. We don’t have clients for Love Diary from January to March 2010 yet. You might then wonder, how about what I shot previously before 2010?

I used to work with a bridal house in Penang. Starting from the position of assistant photographer, I was then appointed and given the camera to shoot there after one month of working. Throughout my service, I dealt with a lot of glamor shoots, family portraits, baby portraits, and last but not least, pre-wedding photographs. I left(on February 2010) because the working environment there is not what I adore and I would wanna try new things and develop my own way of getting things done. However, due to copyright agreements, I am not allowed to use any photos that I have shot for that bridal house.

Wedding is one of the occasion that we spend a lot in our life time. I could understand some clients’ concern since they don’t have much sample to see from our website. Starting from today until June 2010, we are offering Love Diary-Beta. This is a special offering that lets you test run our pre-wedding photographs with the cost of one makeup & hairdo only, which is RM300.00 for couples who confirmed with us before 1st of July. We believe in getting paid for how much effort we put in every assignment.
